LUMBA SUMBA PASS TREK

Nepal'best Undiscovered Trek

  • Duration 22 Days
  • Difficulty Level Medium
  • Includes Equipment, Drinks, Accommodations, Food

Trip Introduction

An unprecedented exploration trip in the little-known region of eastern Nepal, between Kanchenjunga and Makalu, you cross the Lumba Samba pass, out of any conventional itinerary. A real adventure for enthusiasts of Nepal. A journey out of time.

Through a rhododendron forest, you go up the Nango La pass at just over 4700 m, frequented by Tibetans who trade between Olangchungola and Ghunsa. Yak caravans regularly cross this pass, which is a fairly difficult trail.

Your last passage at altitude will undoubtedly be the strongest memory of the trek. We do not know of any other pass which offers a panorama of two very distinct massifs with summits of more than 8000 m. The double pass of Lumba Samba (5100 m) is truly one of the most beautiful places in the Himalayas. The inhabitants of Olangchungola will explain to us that Lumba Samba means new place; insisting on the write error of maps and sites. We must therefore say Lumba Samba and not Lumba Sumba.

Trip Facts:

  • The special habitat of the Kanchenjunga region, wooden houses on stone foundations and shingled roofs.
  • The approach walks to the northern base camp of Kanchenjunga from Ghunsa, through forests of larch and fir trees.
  • The first views of the Janu and its immense north face, then the guardian of Kanchenjunga
  • The view of Kanchenjunga and its satellite peaks.
  • The caravans of yaks at the passage of Nango La which advance under the singing whistles with their heavy bells around the blow and their loads.
  • The village of Olangchungola, which seems quite simple out of time and has stunned us all. Its proximity to Tibet has made it a trading village. Even today, unlike other regions where the passage to Tibet is closed most of the year, yak caravans are frequent between the border and Olangchungola.
  • From the Lumba Samba, the exceptional panorama of the Kanchenjunga and the Janu, then on the west side the incredible view of the Makalu and the Chamlang
  • The impression of a pioneer in crossing bamboo forests, mossy rhododendrons and through immense and wild valleys.
