Trip Introduction

The Kathmandu Valley conveys a whole imagination, starting no doubt with the hippie era. Far from the clichés, you visit the essentials but also the little-known facets of this atypical Asian capital. Visiting Nepal without a trek, yes, it is possible.

The Himalayan anchorage of Kathmandu in an isolated valley at 1300 m although surrounded by two giants, India and Tibet, undoubtedly earns it this uniqueness. Protected for centuries by the Terai swamps to the south and the Himalayan rampart to the north, Kathmandu is one of the rare capitals to have survived the colonial times while retaining its independence. This geographical location made the influences more diffuse but constant. The more easily accessible India has installed its “soft power” through the elites. But it is essentially the religions that mark the influences. Kathmandu is at the intersection of Hindu and Buddhist influences. The Newar ethnic group, living in the Kathmandu valley, perfectly illustrates the acceptance of this dual influence. It is quite common for a Newar family to celebrate both Hindu and Buddhist rites.

Near the city, the valley continues to play its role of nurturing. The borders between religions are more accessible to the novice gaze and time is slowing down. You enjoy this gentler pace in the secluded monasteries and the bari (rice fields in the middle mountains). Depending on the altitude and the season, you cross mustard, rapeseed or corn, buckwheat and barley, banana and orange fields, a patchwork of cultures. The Nepalese communicate their joie de vivre, their good humor, and their smiles to you.
